Many people have collections of ornaments, winter villages, Santas, angels and nativity scenes they enjoy displaying in their homes during the Christmas season. How can you reinvent your display from year to year while maintaining and honoring tradition? Here are a few tips:

Christmas OrnamentsSort and Limit

When sorting through your collection, there are always favorite items that hold special memories. Use these as the centerpieces for your display, and then be selective about adding additional pieces. First, study the main centerpiece for a “theme”, such as a unique color, shape or texture. Then select additional pieces based on how well they fit into that theme. For example, this year chocolate with varying green accents is a popular theme, as is chartreuse paired with deep, rich green. You can also keep your look current by adding new ornaments, a table runner or new ribbon.

Relocate

Place your collections in different locations from past years. Sometimes it’s easy to fall into a pattern over the holidays. However, something as simple as moving your various collections to different locations will do wonders to spruce up your holidays. For example, instead of hanging your stockings over the fireplace, why not hang them on the stair banister or on each child’s bedpost? And don’t leave them empty. Stuff them with tissue and decorate the top with small gifts, or ribbons and mini ornaments. Or you can use pieces from village scenes as nightlights by placing them on bathroom vanities or kitchen countertops and keeping them lit during the evenings.

Place your nativity figures along with silk greens, garland and candles on the buffet or dining room table. Place the Holy Family on a raised crystal plate for added dimension. Clustering items along with adding height and size variations will create interest in any tablescape. You can also add ribbons and ornaments.

This year, treat your family to a fresh or silk wreath for the front door. It reflects the joy and warmth of the season and helps to truly make your home a “home for the holidays!”
